It's not everyday that the classic music listening public
of Norway is served up a recording of purely orchestral works by a home-grown
composer.
This new recording of Jon Mosta's orchestral works front the 1980's (the
last was written in 1990) presents us therefore with the rather unusual
opportunity of observing a Norwegian composer's development with in the
none-too-stifling cornfines of a great orchestral apparatus. Mostad's compositional
technique and formal language shows itself to be well adapted to the orchestral
medium; the writing style radiates all amplitude commonly referred to as
that 'of orchestral dimensions'.
Such a Style is informed by a very special consciousness and manipulation
of temporal placing and of information load, and the want of such has often
proved the bane of Would-be orchestral composers of otherwise usable chamber
works.
Orchestral works present themselves in several places throughout Mostad's
Opus to date, suggesting that his formal sense seeks intuitively thighter
to the genre where it best and most fully can express itself.
